Reynolds Archives
Description
An account of the resource

Reynolds Archives contains archival items from both Reynolds Homestead and Reynolda House Museum of American Art.

The Reynolds Homestead was built in 1843 as the Rock Spring Plantation in Critz, Virginia, by Hardin Reynolds, a successful farmer, merchant, banker, and tobacco manufacturer. Hardin and Nancy Cox Reynolds’s son, Richard Joshua (R.J.), founded the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and their grandson, Richard Samuel, Sr., founded Reynolds Metals. The Reynolds Homestead has been designated a State and National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Registry of American Homes.

Richard Joshua “R.J.” Reynolds (1850-1918), founder of the Reynolds Tobacco Company, married Katharine Smith in 1905. Shortly afterwards, the couple constructed the Reynolda House on a plot of 1,000 acres of purchased land, moving from Critz, Virginia to Winston-Salem, North Carolina upon its completion in 1917. Starting construction in 1912, Katharine Smith Reynolds contracted and assisted Charles Barton Keene, a Philadelphia-based architect in designing the house and the surrounding farm buildings. Landscaping of the area, including gardens, farms, and creation of a 16-acre artificial lake was initially drafted by New York landscape designers Buckenham & Miller and completed by Philadelphian landscape architect Thomas W. Sears, who replaced them. Today, the Reynolda House is a museum for American art ranging from the colonial period to the present day.

Donor's notecard
Description
An account of the resource
Donor's notecard explaining the letter written by Willie Reynolds to an anonymous girl, referred to only as “Sugar-Pie.” Typed in 1919 on a Danville and Western Railway Company letterhead, the letter appeals to the anonymous woman romantically, requesting that she write back and asking if she has feelings for the sender, Willie. At this time, there exists little information on who Willie is in relation to the Reynolds family - while there was a Willie Reynolds alive around that time, the boy was only around 10 years old at the time the letter was written. However, the letter still provides an interesting insight into the love lives of people in the early 1900s, and how the process of courting contrasts to modern methods.

Mr. Martin
Description
An account of the resource
Figurative painter Anne Bell was educated at the university of Georgia and studied at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Since 1978 she has had numerous exhibitions and portrait commissions. Her method in approaching her subject is unique: "I paint in a realistic and sensitive style which not only portrays my subjects in a realistic fashion, but captures the mood and subtle nuances of the setting." Bell's painting Mr. Martin presents a common fixture at the downtown farmer's market. With his portrait, Bell looked to depict "the nostalgia of our lovely market historical area."

Born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Dow traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian and studied the work of british designer William Morris. Considered one of the most influential teachers of his time in the field of arts and crafts, one of Dow's most well known students was artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Deeply influenced by Japanese art and aesthetics, Dow sought out subjects such as architectural elements and natural landscapes mainly located on Boston's North Shore, which he felt were best suited to his Asian inspired appreciation of nature.

Dancer
Description
An account of the resource
Based in Roanoke, Virginia Betty Branch earned both her BA and MA in Studio Art from Hollins University. her work has been the focus of numerous solo and international exhibitions. Over a thirty-year period, Branch has focused on the female form and has defined female rites of passage in both traditional terra cotta, earthware, and straw. she looks to impressive Cycladic Greek fertility goddesses and other sources of feminine genesis to form complex and substantial sculptural works that exude power and energy. Branch's female forms vacillate between the lush and the lissome. In Dancer, Branch captures the fluid cyclical motion of a woman's body captured in mid-dance, to the point of abstraction.

An account of the resource
Born in Vietnam in 1977, two years after the fall of Saigon, Danh and his family left their home in 1979 and immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s. The experience of displacement and his eventual trip back to his country of birth inspired the artist to create work exploring his homeland's history using found and natural materials. By inventing a process known as chlorophyll painting, Danh found the perfect metaphor to honor the thousands of people murdered by the Khmer Rouge regime. Printed on a variety of tropical plants, Danh's portraits of the victims are permanently imprinted into the matrix of the leave's structure.

Description
An account of the resource
Roanoke based artist, curator, and educator Brian Sieveking blurs the boundaries between history, mythology and pop culture. Sieveking comments, "My work draws upon my lifelong interest in history, popular culture, the odd and the arcane particularly as it relates to the mythology of the South." [Hank Williams] Grace And Violence is part of a large series in which the artist created cryptic and iconic images in a style similar to commercial art to emphasize culture's commodification of Southern symbols. Sieveking's work is held in public and private collections in 14 states and seven countries. He is a long time collector and researcher of southern folk art and has curated, lectured and written extensively on the subject.

An account of the resource
CINVA is one of the sub-collections from Leonard J. Currie's Slides Collection.

Leonard J. Currie (1913 - 1996) was an architect, educator, and world traveler. He studied with Walter Gropius at Harvard, was Head of Architecture at Virginia Tech 1956-1952, and Dean of the School of Architecture and Art at the University of Illinois at Chicago 1961-1981. After retiring from UI Chicago, he returned Blacksburg, Virginia, where he continued to practice architecture. His slides, taken at home and abroad, focus on the built environment.

Leonard Currie was the founding director of CINVA, a community development program in Colombia initiated by the Organization of American States in 1951. CINVA worked with the local population to alleviate severe housing shortages in urban and rural Colombia by designing new communities and developing construction methods that people could use to build their own houses. The CINVA team was international. They trained young Colombian professionals to expand and continue their work. This collection includes material from Bogotá and Sogamosa.
