The Museum is home to a highly regarded permanent collection totaling around 2,400 works (over 2,200 items from permanent collection plus the special collections archive). The collection includes American, Southeast American Contemporary, Folk, Regional and Visionary artwork featuring the work of artists such as Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Purvis Young, Petah Coyne and John Cage, to name just a few.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, painter Katherine Porter trained at Colorado College and Boston university , ultimately receiving an honorary doctorate from Colby College. Porter seeks, through the use of strong geometric shapes and contrasting colors, to give form to ideas, particularly of change and conflict. This painting's title word "convergence" refers to movement of several elements into one.
